The Tiger Cage

The Tiger Cage

Every step an earthquake of defiance

Echoing through corridors of gold

Underneath the pride and self-reliance

Burns a flame a thousand eons old

One man’s mansion on the hilltop

Is another’s tiger cage

Within the bars our dreams are ended

By an instinct that’s descended

From an ancient prehistoric age

Drift across the marble in the twilight

Too naïve to see we’re not alone

Just around the corner are the tigers

Their desire runs deeper than our own

One man’s homestead in the valley

Is another’s tiger cage

In a flash of silver claws

Crushed between unyielding jaws

Comes the final stanza on the page

Quiet is the urge that drives the feeding

Decadent the halls amid the still

Enmity and animus receding

Elegant and merciful the kill

One man’s castle by the ocean

Is another’s tiger cage

With their hunger sweetly sated

Now the beasts patrol unaided

Left to strut their hour upon the stage
